What is Corneal Dystrophy?

Stage 1 · No symptoms

The cornea is still clear. Nothing is felt, and a visual exam alone cannot detect it.

The stage changes as you scroll

DEFINITION

Corneal dystrophy is a hereditary disease where grayish-white proteins accumulate in the cornea during the healing process after damage. It can lead to loss of transparency, vision loss, and potentially blindness.

PREVALENCE

1 / 870

Approx. 1 in 870 people carry the Avellino corneal dystrophy gene.

*Based on prevalence studies in the Korean population

KEY FEATURES

No early symptoms

May show no symptoms before surgery, undetectable by visual examination alone

Rapid worsening after surgery

Corneal incision procedures like LASIK/LASEK can dramatically accelerate latent dystrophy

Hereditary condition

Passed through generations, making testing essential for both you and your family

Wounds from vision correction surgery can cause protein deposits,
leading to severe vision loss or even blindness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the test painful?▼

Not at all. It's just a gentle swab inside the cheek, so there's almost no pain.

Isn't a slit-lamp exam enough? Why is a DNA test needed?▼

Corneal dystrophy may remain asymptomatic until as late as the 30s to 70s depending on genetic and environmental factors. Since visual exams (slit lamp) alone can miss it, genetic testing is recommended to accurately confirm mutations for safe surgery.

When will I get the results?▼

Results are out about 90 minutes after starting lab analysis. Same-day surgery is possible!

How should someone with corneal dystrophy manage it?▼

1. Avoid vision correction surgeries like LASIK/LASEK. 2. Minimize external stimuli like UV rays. Wear UV-protective glasses or wide-brimmed hats outdoors. 3. Be careful to avoid eye injuries during vigorous activity.
